Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-101a, T-7, High R.3, Fine 15 PCGS. Half dollars were struck for the first time in 1794, when a small mintage of 23,464 pieces was produced, with 11 die varieties known for the date. This coin was struck from the O-101 die pair, with star 1 piercing the middle of the lowest curl and 21 berries in the wreath. A die crack from the edge through the F in OF, turns sharply upward, and just misses the outer berry, to the last S in STATES, identifying the late die state O-101a.
This is a problem-free Fine 15 example, with the hair ends distinguishable and some interior detail on the upper hair lines intact. The lavender-gray and blue-steel surfaces are free of large or distracting abrasions and the overall presentation is quite pleasing.
