Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-101a, T-7, High R.3, VF20 PCGS. The usual crack between the D and S is present, with an additional die crack from the border to the F in OF, and the leaf pair below that letter, turning sharply left to the upper single leaf and the final S in STATES. The O-101 is positioned seventh of 11 varieties in the 1794 half dollar emission sequence. All 1794 and 1795 half dollars were coined at the Philadelphia Mint between December 1, 1794 and June 5, 1795, with a total production of 323,144 coins. The Guide Book assigns a mintage of 23,464 half dollars in 1794, equal to the total of the December 1, 1794 delivery (5,300) and the February 4, 1795 delivery (18,164). We believe that there are about 500 existing 1794 half dollars and about 3,500 surviving 1795 half dollars. This pleasing piece has light gray at the centers, gradually morphing to steel and pale gold near the borders. A glass reveals faint hairlines and trivial handling marks that are unapparent without magnification.
