Early Half Dollars
1794 50C O-104, T-11, R.5, Good 6 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 1/1. Struck from a reverse die that is unique in the Flowing Hair series, this relatively scarce variety has 10 berries along the right side of the wreath (six inside, four outside). The reverse legend is more evenly spaced than other 1794 working dies, although UNITED shows more space between its letters than do STATES OF AMERICA. Typical of the short die life for most 1794 varieties, the O-104 obverse soon cracked, and the reverse clashed heavily, then also broke. However, this example was struck from perfect dies. Smoothly worn with pleasing old-silver color that deepens at the margins, it shows grade-consistent wear and only a few light abrasions.
