Bust Half Dollars
1815/2 50C O-101a, R.3, AU50 NGC. Triple die clashing and a network of strong die cracks on the reverse was ignored by the Mint, which was under pressure to produce any kind of coinage in 1815. Shortages of bullion as well as after effects from the War of 1812 limited the Mint to a meager mintage of 47,150 half dollars struck at the end of 1815 -- all from a leftover die pair from 1812. Clear remnants of the underdigit 2 remain visible beneath the primary 5 despite the late die stage. Bluish-bronze toning covers both sides of this well-defined Bust half, a low-mintage overdate that is always of keen interest to prospective bidders. Census: 19 in 50, 81 finer (10/17).
