Seated Half Dollars
1879 50C Closed Bud, WB-102, MS67 NGC. The 1879 Seated half dollar is the first of the low-mintage Philadelphia issues from the tail-end of the series. Only 4,800 pieces were struck, although enough Mint State representatives were saved at the time of issue that the date is moderately collectible today. This outstanding MS67 coin is one of only a small number of pieces that are worthy of the Superb Gem grade level. Both sides display an attractive combination of vibrant luster and semiprooflike mirroring, with blended mint-gold, ocean-blue, and lavender-gold hues blanketing each side. The strike is sharp, and a few small marks on Liberty's legs are the only surface abrasions of note. Census: 12 in 67 (3 in 67★), 1 finer (10/17).
