Proof Seated Half Dollars
1873 50C Arrows PR66 ★ NGC. In 1873, the Mint made two changes to the Seated Liberty half dollar. Arrows were added on either side of the date to signify an increase in silver weight from 12.44 gm (the standard since 1853) to 12.50 gm, and the date logotype was changed partway through the year to widen the 3 so it would not be mistaken for an 8. Proof 1873 half dollars struck in the early, lighter standard show the Closed 3 date type, and those struck in the heavier 12.50 gm standard show the modified Open 3 in the date.
This With Arrows, Open 3 proof is among the finest non-Cameos at NGC, showing a full strike and mirrored fields. Warm, sun-gold toning appears over much of each side, although ribbons of blue and violet grace the right-hand peripheries, reminiscent of old "proof set" toning. A few stray lines in the right obverse field determine the grade. The obverse of this piece displays considerable cameo contrast, although the reverse shows less contrast amid the colorful toning. Census: 11 in 66 (3 in 66), 0 finer (10/17).
