Proof Seated Half Dollars
1874 50C Arrows PR65 NGC. The weight of half dollars increased slightly under the Coinage Act of 1873, signified by arrows placed before and after the date on the 1873 and 1874 issues. A two-year type, just 700 proofs were struck in 1874 and only about 5% of those survive in Gem or finer grades. This brilliant PR65 coin displays subtle contrast between the frosted devices and mirrored fields. The strike is impressively sharp except at the left (facing) eagle's talon. Only a few random, delicate lines are visible under a loupe. Census: 14 in 65, 10 finer (10/17).
