Barber Half Dollars
1896-O 50C MS66 NGC. CAC. The 1896-O Barber half dollar claims a smallish mintage of 924,000 pieces and many numismatists consider it the most challenging issue of the series in high grade. Few examples were saved by contemporary collectors, making the 1896-O scarce, even in collectible circulated condition. The finest-certified example is the PCGS MS67 Eliasberg specimen, which sold for $88,125 as lot 4075 of the ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2015). At the MS66 level, only a few examples are known, including the Thaine B. Price and Duckor/Gardner specimens, which have both sold at auction several times in the last two decades, for prices up to $51,750. This entirely original Premium Gem, along with another MS66 PCGS coin, round out the Condition Census. An additional MS66 coin listed on the NGC Census is a duplication, making the present offering the single-finest coin at that service (10/17).
The impeccably preserved original surfaces of this remarkable Premium Gem are blanketed in attractive shades of golden-brown and lavender-gray toning, with vibrant, satiny mint luster underneath. The design elements are especially well-detailed for a New Orleans issue, with just a touch of the usual softness on the eagle's claw. Overall eye appeal is terrific. Until appearing last year, this coin was off the market since at least 1932. CAC: 4 in 66, 1 finer (10/17).
