Morgan Dollars
1879-CC $1 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. The availability of Carson City Morgan dollar issues is closely linked to the quantities of each date that were distributed in the GSA sales of the 1970s. In the case of the 1879-CC, only 4,123 GSA coins were counted, and this is now the second-scarcest Carson City issue in the series in Mint State. Series specialists often consider it "the other Carson City key," relating its popularity and the difficulty of its acquisition to the more famous 1889-CC. Collectors can generally acquire coins in the MS62 to MS64 grade range for a price, but finer than this the 1879-CC is a notable challenge. The combination of the Plus designation and the CAC green label award this piece a surplus of appeal that complements its vibrant, frosty luster and sharp strike. A few faint grazes in the obverse field are all that prevent full Gem classification.
