1883-CC $1 GSA MS67 PCGS. CAC. VAM-5B. The 1883-CC saw only about a third of its 1.2 million-piece mintage released into circulation, some at the time of mintage, and others as late as the 20th century. The rest went into storage, where the 1883-CC was the second most-abundant Carson City issue in the GSA sales that dispersed the federal government's holdings. Very few certified Superb Gem coins remain in their original GSA holders.
For variety collectors, this example represents VAM-5B, with a die gouge at the eagle's beak, a die scratch in the right (facing) wing, as well as doubling at the date and mintmark. No dash is visible beneath the second 8 in the date. Creamy, brilliant-white surfaces are lustrous and sharply struck with a clean cheek on Liberty and smooth, nearly mark-free fields. A small contact in the right reverse field beneath the wing is the sole abrasion of note. This CAC-endorsed example is one of just two pieces certified by PCGS at the MS67 level while still in its hard black GSA holder. The coin and its native holder are encased by PCGS "as issued." Population: 2 in 67 (1 in 67+), 0 finer (10/17).
