Morgan Dollars
1889-CC $1 MS61 NGC. It is somewhat amazing that any 1889 silver dollars were struck at the Carson City Mint at all. Coinage operations had been suspended for the prior three years, and when the Nevada Mint was reactivated in July, 1889, not only was the equipment inoperable, the Mint lacked staffing and trained technicians to bring operations back online. Eventually, 350,000 silver dollars and 31,000 double eagles were struck late in the year -- a tiny output for the facility, especially for the dollars.
This Mint State example is brightly lustrous and untoned, with silver-white surfaces that show little evidence of the challenges to its very existence. Abrasions are few for a CC-Mint dollar -- which are usually bagmarked regardless of the date -- especially at the assigned grade level. The strike is quite sharp for an 1889-CC, with excellent eye appeal.
