Proof Gold Dollars
1888 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. No non-Cameo proof 1888 gold dollars are certified finer then PR65 at NGC, heightening demand for the few Cameos known in this lofty condition. The present Premium Gem displays razor-sharp detail and modest contrast. The bright yellow-gold surfaces show no distractions. Although Mint records indicate a coinage 1,079 proof gold dollars in 1888, most have not survived. Including possible resubmissions, NGC and PCGS combined have certified only 242 examples of this elusive and well-made issue. In the past, the availability of the 1888 proofs was skewed by prooflike circulation strikes that were frequently offered as proofs. Our Permanent Auction Archives show that we have handled proofs on only 77 different occasions. Census: 12 in 66 Cameo (1 in 66+), 8 finer; 2 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 3 finer (10/17).
