Classic Quarter Eagles
1839-D $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. Winter 1-A, Variety 26, R.3. The Weak Stem variety with much of the branch stem and other details at the lower reverse lapped from the die. The other variety, from a different reverse die, shows a bold stem. The obverse has a recut 9 in the date, and in many older references it is called a 9 over 8 overdate.
The 1839-D is the first quarter eagle struck in Dahlonega, Georgia, and it is also the only Classic Head gold piece struck at that Mint. For those reasons, it is an extremely popular variety with collectors. The present piece has excellent design elements and full luster, with moderately abraded surfaces that prevent a higher grade. However, this issue is elusive in any high grade. Census: 1 in 60, 11 finer (10/17).
Ex: Houston Signature (Heritage, 12/2008), lot 1834.
