Liberty Quarter Eagles
1853 $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. Frosty and attractive, this 1853 quarter eagle has just a hint of pale olive-gold iridescence. The design is sharp save for the IB in LIBERTY and the eagle's right thigh (viewer's left) and left claw, which show a touch of strike softness. The 1853 is readily available in the MS60 to MS63 range due to the existence of a hoard, but as with so many other issues in the 19th-century U.S. gold series, only a coterie of Uncirculated survivors can claim membership in the Gem category. Census: 21 in 65 (3 in 65 ★), 1 finer (10/17).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2005), lot 7559; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2013), lot 6900.
