Proof Liberty Quarter Eagles
1884 $2 1/2 PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS. The 1884 quarter eagle is a rare coin in any format. Only 1,950 circulation strikes were made, and just 723 proofs were struck. Among the proofs, perhaps as few as 30 to 40 pieces survive. Most of those have Cameo contrast, although the population figures are inflated by many resubmissions and crossovers. PCGS reports only two 1884 Deep Cameo proofs -- this coin, plus another in PR66 Deep Cameo.
The present example displays glittering rich-gold color and a pinpoint-sharp strike. A scattering of light marks determines the assigned grade. Deep reflectivity in the fields contrasts boldly with the sharp and frosted raised devices. Population: 1 in 63 Deep Cameo, 1 finer (11/17).
