Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1878 $3 MS67+ PCGS. The cataloger recalls, as a young numismatist, a fascination with three dollar gold pieces, and how great it would be to see one in person. The opportunity occurred on a summer day in 1971, during a visit to the late Leon Hendrickson at SilverTowne in Winchester, Indiana. Mr. Hendrickson was happy to share his knowledge, and let a young teenager hold the coin and study it in person, knowing full well that a sale was not going to happen. The memory of that long ago day is still as vivid as if it happened yesterday, with thanks to Leon for his kindness. Today, these coins are just as fascinating as they were nearly half a century ago, despite handling hundreds of pieces over the years.
The present Superb Gem ranks among the finest surviving examples, regardless of the issue. For all issues from 1854 to 1889, PCGS has only graded six examples in MS67+, with just four finer pieces. This impressive piece exhibits pristine, virtually perfect surfaces with brilliant and highly lustrous mint frost. The lovely yellow-gold luster displays a blend of delicate rose and blue toning, with a solitary dark toning spot outside the upper right branch of the wreath. This is an extraordinary example for the advanced Set Registry collector who seeks the three dollar series, and having the highest population among all three dollar pieces, the 1878 is a great choice for a gold type set featuring all of the different designs. Population: 8 in 67 (3 in 67+), 0 finer (10/17).
