Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1889 $3 MS66+ PCGS. The three dollar gold denomination was discontinued after 1889, when a token business-strike mintage of 2,300 pieces was accomplished. Many of the coins were never released into circulation and were melted in the 1893-1894 time period. Super collector Virgil Brand ordered fifty specimens of the 1889 three dollar gold piece directly from the mint at the time of issue. Those coins would have been dispersed in later years, possibly providing many of the high-grade examples known to collectors today.
The present coin is a delightful Plus-graded Premium Gem, with sharply detailed design elements and vibrant, satiny mint luster on both sides. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show only minimal signs of contact and overall eye appeal is terrific. Population: 13 in 66 (2 in 66+), 2 finer (10/17).
