Early Half Eagles
1812 $5 BD-1, R.3, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. This was the final year for the Capped Bust Left design. The series is known for a host of varieties, including overdates, Small and Large dates, Small and Large denominations, Small and Large 5s, and in this case Wide and Narrow 5 D. Uniformity of design elements was still a couple of decades away, and these early Mint products provide collectors with a wider variety of coins to pursue than might at first appear to be the case. In any event, this BD-1 half eagle features wide spacing between the 5 and D. Examples are slightly more available than the scarcer BD-2 variant.
This piece has bright lemon-gold surfaces. Sharply defined on the obverse with slight softness over the central reverse. Both sides are generally free from abrasions, and the only marks worthy of mention are a number of parallel adjustment marks on Liberty's cheek.
