Early Half Eagles
1813 $5 BD-1, R.2, MS61 NGC. Lightly marked for the MS61 level, this attractive half eagle features straw-gold color and has ample bright luster. The strike is very sharp, since only the claws and the forehead curls lack intricate definition. The first issue of the Capped Head Left design, which continues the reverse of John Reich's 1807 design but modifies Liberty's portrait. The most obvious change is that the bust is truncated just beneath the neck on the 1813 version. Although the 1813 BD-1 is common by the standards of the type, BD-2 is several times scarcer and is rarely encountered.
