Classic Half Eagles
1838 $5 MS61 NGC. Breen-6515, McCloskey 2-B, R.1. The 1838 Classic Head five is scarce in all Mint State grades. Two varieties exist for the Philadelphia issue. The present McCloskey 2-B coin displays the Small Arrows reverse, and a Large 5 in the denomination. This example is lustrous and attractive, with medium-gold surfaces and orange accents near the rims. Light field abrasions are grade-consistent, and the strike is sharp with only minor loss of detail on the centers of stars 5 and 6. Census: 34 in 61, 50 finer (10/17).
