Classic Half Eagles
1838-C $5 XF40 PCGS. Breen-6516, Variety 2, R.5. Repunched 5. This late die state shows the reverse heavily lapped, with a bisecting die crack from 8 to 2 o'clock. Light wear appears over the olive-gold surfaces. Eye appeal is pleasing. The 1838-C is a one-year type in the Charlotte half eagle series. Only 17,179 pieces were struck, and survivors are in high demand in all grades today. Specialist Doug Winter estimates that most of the extant population is in the VF to XF grade range, and heavily weighted toward the lower end.
