Liberty Eagles
1853-O $10 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Variety 6. Deposits of California gold at the New Orleans Mint in 1851 prompted a coinage of 263,000 eagles that year, although coinage of the denomination declined in the following years. The 1853-O ten mintage was only 51.000 pieces. This issue is scarce in AU grades and extremely rare in Mint State. The present coin, a near-Mint example, is tied for the finest endorsed by CAC. The strike is bold, and almost no discernible wear is seen on the devices; light rub in the fields prevents a Mint State grade, although the bright yellow-gold surfaces are somewhat lustrous. The die variety is previously unlisted, sharing the common 1853 obverse with a reverse that shows the mintmark almost perfectly centered between the fletching tip and the top of the N in TEN, directly over the left serif of the N. Population: 14 in 58 (1 in 58+), 3 finer. CAC: 9 in 58, 0 finer (10/17).
