Liberty Double Eagles
1852-O $20 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1. In the early 1850s, the primary origin of gold bullion deposits at the United States Mint and its branches was California, with smaller domestic quantities coming from Oregon and the Atlantic states. Double eagles were the principle recipient of freshly mined gold out of all of the circulating federal denominations, resulting in fairly substantial mintages at both Philadelphia and New Orleans. Production of double eagles at New Orleans amounted to 190,000 pieces in 1852, a number dwarfed by the Philadelphia mintage of more than 2 million pieces but still rating as one of the highest production totals of the series from that facility. Double eagle coinage at this branch mint rapidly declined in 1854, after the San Francisco Mint became operational and California gold was no longer shipped in large quantities to Eastern mints.
Today, the 1852-O is one of the only New Orleans double eagles that is moderately collectible, although it is conditionally scarce. This Choice AU coin displays sharp detail and partially lustrous yellow-gold surfaces. There is a small planchet lamination left of the mintmark, and small abrasions are noted on Liberty's cheek. Uncirculated examples of this date are rare.
