Liberty Double Eagles
1853/'2' $20 FS-301, Breen-7162, AU55 PCGS. The few Uncirculated examples of this variety known appear at auction with great infrequency, and when offered command fierce bidding. Much more collectible are the upper-end AU coins, which are still conditionally scarce and offer much of the luster and eye appeal of low-end Uncirculated pieces. On this coin, the so-called overdate feature is plain, and the repunching on the 1 in the date is readily discernible. The die lump beneath the R in LIBERTY is a ready identifier of the variety. Luster remains in the fields, and each side shows generally smooth patina with only minor friction from a brief stint in circulation. The strike is sharp. PCGS has certified only 120 examples of the variety in all grades, mostly clustered in XF and the AU55-AU58 range.
