Liberty Double Eagles
1853/'2' $20 FS-301, Breen-7162, AU55 NGC. Walter Breen claimed to have discovered this variety in 1959, calling it an 1853/2 overdate. Modern photographic overlays suggest that it is not a true overdate, although there is debate on this issue. The 1 is recut at its base, which likely led Breen and others to conclude that this was an overdate. Regardless, the variety is highly publicized, scarce, and listed in the Guide Book, which generates a collector market that treats this variety as a separate issue necessary for a complete collection. Both the NGC Registry and the PCGS Major Varieties Registry Set include this variety.
NGC has certified slightly more than 200 examples of this variety, including several pieces from the S.S. Republic shipwreck. However, Uncirculated pieces are very rare. This collectible Choice AU coin displays sharp detail and moderately frosted luster, where that luster is not subdued by slight field rub consistent with the grade. There are a few marks, but the eye appeal is generally strong.
