Liberty Double Eagles
1876-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-A. The Carson City Mint produced more double eagles in 1876 than in any other year with a production of 138,441 coins with a face value of more than $2.7 million. Those coins would be conservatively valued at $500 million today. A die scratch curves down over the L in LIBERTY and extends through IBE, characteristic of this obverse die. Faint bluish-green patina appears over the still lustrous yellow surfaces that exhibit minimal handling marks.
