Liberty Double Eagles
1876-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 2-A. Collectors seeking a Mint State Type Two Carson City double eagle tend to gravitate to the available 1875-CC. The 1876-CC is much scarcer in high grade, although this issue has a decades-long reputation for being scarce but not too scarce in Mint State. The present coin represents the average grade of an Uncirculated survivor, although eye appeal surpasses expectations. Sharp design elements complement frosty orange-gold mint luster and a radiant cartwheel effect. Field chatter and light marks on Liberty's cheek limit the grade, but no individually significant abrasions are seen. The availability of this issue declines in MS62, and no finer pieces are reported at PCGS (10/17).
