Liberty Double Eagles
1878-CC $20 AU55 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Double eagle production at the Carson City Mint declined drastically in 1878, when a meager mintage of 13,180 pieces was accomplished. The coins were released into circulation and fulfilled their intended purpose admirably in the hard-money economy of the western United States. The 1878-CC is the fourth-rarest issue of the Carson City series today, both in terms of total number of coins known and high-grade rarity.
The present coin is an impressive Choice AU specimen that shows just a trace of wear on the high points of the strongly impressed design elements. A long, thin die line on Liberty's neck identifies the more available Variety 1-A. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and retain much of their original mint luster. The overall presentation is most attractive. Population: 25 in 55, 23 finer (10/17).
