Liberty Double Eagles
1878-S $20 MS62 PCGS. Like most San Francisco Mint double eagles of this era, the 1878-S was produced in large numbers (1.7 million pieces), but the coins circulated heavily and many were used to settle large accounts in foreign trade. Some of those coins have been repatriated in recent years, but rough handling during shipping and storage has taken a toll on those pieces. The 1878-S is an available issue in lower grades, but it is a condition rarity above the MS62 level. This well-detailed MS62 specimen exhibits vivid orange-gold surfaces, with much prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas and the expected number of contact marks for the grade. PCGS has graded 12 numerically finer examples (10/17).
