Liberty Double Eagles
1879-CC $20 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The early die state, neither side of this AU 1879-CC twenty shows discernible die lapping, which effaces tailfeathers in a later stage. This is the only die pairing known for 1879-CC double eagles, and this issue has a small mintage of only 10,708 coins. Deposits of gold at the Carson City Mint declined in 1879, and in October coinage operations were temporarily suspended due to a lack of sufficient bullion to keep the facility operating for even another month. The Carson City Mint remained open as a bullion depository, and in April 1880, coinage of various denominations was resumed. But the mintage of the 1879-CC double eagle was forever stunted.
The 1879-CC is a scarce issue in all grades today and very rare in Mint State. This collectible About Uncirculated example displays warm orange-gold color and partially lustrous fields. Friction in the fields and slight blending of Liberty's hair curls defines the grade.
