Liberty Double Eagles
1879-O $20 AU53 PCGS. Variety 1. The New Orleans Mint reopened for coinage operations in 1879, mostly to coin large numbers of Morgan silver dollars. A token mintage of 2,325 Liberty double eagles was also accomplished that year, but no twenty dollar coins were ever struck at the Southern facility after 1879. Accordingly, the 1879-O is the only Type Three double eagle from the New Orleans Mint. As might be expected, the 1879-O is a scarce-to-rare in all grades today and the issue is always in demand.
The present coin is an attractive AU53 example, with only light wear on the well-detailed design elements. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces display a few hints of rose and lilac, and considerable amounts of original mint luster remain intact. Population: 6 in 53, 14 finer (10/17).
