Liberty Double Eagles
1881 $20 -- Reverse Scratched -- NGC Details. AU. Among all the Liberty double eagles coined from 1850 through 1907, only four issues had lower mintages than the 2,199 pieces struck in 1881. Those issues were all struck at the Philadelphia Mint: 1882, 1885, 1886, and 1891. This issue is extremely rare in circulation strike format, as most old collections contained proofs, if they had one at all. In fact, the Smithsonian Institution lacks a circulation strike 1881 double eagle. This pleasing AU representative has a reverse scratch that may lessen the value, but hardly dampens collector enthusiasm for the popular rarity.
