Liberty Double Eagles
1882-CC $20 MS60 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The downward-sloping CC mintmark and die line above LAR in DOLLAR confirm the scarcer of two known die pairs for the 1882-CC. Officials at the Carson City Mint limited double eagle output to 39,140 coins in 1882, when the facility ended a two-year hiatus on the production of these large gold pieces. It appears the coins circulated stateside -- most survive in XF to AU grades -- though the estimated 100 or so Uncirculated examples (all in MS63 or lower) may have avoided circulation in overseas vaults.
The surfaces are relatively smooth considering the coin's size and grade. Still, small abrasions are peppered throughout. The devices are bold without evidence of friction, and frosted mint luster merges with light yellow-gold color. A pleasing CC condition rarity.
