Liberty Double Eagles
1883-S $20 MS64 PCGS. From a substantial mintage of 1.1 million pieces, the 1883-S Liberty double eagle is surprisingly difficult to locate in high grade. The coins were released into circulation and many were used to settle accounts in foreign trade. Rough handling during shipping and storage contributed to the attrition of high-grade specimens. The 1883-S is available in lower grades today, but the issue is a condition rarity at the MS64 grade level.
The present coin is an attractive Choice specimen, with sharply detailed design elements and lightly marked peach-gold surfaces. Vibrant mint luster adds to the outstanding visual appeal. Population: 15 in 64 (1 in 64+), 0 finer (10/17).
