Liberty Double Eagles
1884-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. The Carson City Mint accepted slightly more than $1.45 million in gold deposits during the fiscal year 1884, entirely from domestic mining sources. Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans routinely received deposits of foreign bullion or coin, but the Carson City Mint, like the Denver Assay Office, was established to service the local mining community. Much of the gold received at Carson City was coined into double eagles, with a mintage of 81,139 pieces for the 1884 calendar year. This date remains plentiful in the context of Carson City gold and is ideal for type collectors seeking a single coin from this mint. The present near-Mint example displays a sharp strike and frosty orange-gold luster. Light friction on Liberty's cheek is all that prevents a Mint State grade.
