Liberty Double Eagles
1884-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-A. From a mintage of 81,139 pieces, the 1884-CC Liberty double eagle is one of the more available dates of the Carson City series. The 1884-CC was a well-produced issue and a number of lower Mint State pieces were discovered in European holdings in the early 1990s. Its relative availability in high grade makes the 1881-CC a popular choice with branch mint type collectors, but the 1889-CC is still quite elusive in higher Mint State grades. The 1884-CC was seldom offered publicly before the mid-1930s, when examples began appearing in Thomas Elder sales, Like the Wendell C. Foster Collection (6/1935) and the Lenz, Sloane and Others Collections (1/1936). The issue has appeared at auction regularly in recent years, with the prices realized record belonging to the MS63 PCGS specimen in lot 5730 of the Chicago Signature (Heritage, 8/2014), which realized $70,500.
The present coin is an impressive MS61 specimen, with sharply detailed design elements and pleasing orange-gold surfaces that are lightly marked for the grade. Both sides radiate vibrant mint luster and the overall presentation is most appealing. PCGS has graded 85 numerically finer examples (10/17).
