Liberty Double Eagles
1889-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A. The Carson City Mint reopened for coinage operations in 1889, after a hiatus of several years. Despite a small mintage of 30,945 pieces, the 1889-CC is one of the more available Liberty double eagles from the Carson City facility. The 1889-CC surfaced in a significant hoard in the mid-1990s, accounting for much of its availability today. Of course, even though it is relatively easy to locate in lower grades, the 1889-CC is still a scarce issue in Mint State condition.
This impressive Choice AU example exhibits sharply detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster throughout. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade. Overall eye appeal is quite strong. Census: 28 in 61, 15 finer (10/17).
