Liberty Double Eagles
1890-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The 1890-CC Liberty double eagle claims a mintage of 91,209 pieces, a substantial production total in the context of the series. Many of the coins were used to settle accounts in foreign trade and a significant number of pieces have been repatriated from European holdings over the years. As a result, the 1890-CC is a relatively available issue in today's market and a favorite choice of branch mint type collectors.
This impressive MS61 displays well-detailed design elements with a touch of softness on several star centers. The tail feathers have lost some detail due to lapping, and a long die crack extends through the tops of the letters in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Orange-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster and show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade.
