Liberty Double Eagles
1893-CC $20 AU58+ PCGS. Variety 1-A. The fact that the 1893-CC is almost never seen in grades under AU50 suggests that few coins were released into circulation by the Mint. Those coins that were not melted show varying degrees of friction and bagmarks from transport and handling. In fact, one can argue that the 1893-CC is every bit as rare as the legendary 1870-CC double eagle in VF condition.
The present coin is just a whisper away from fully Uncirculated. Vivid orange-gold color is enhanced by cartwheel luster, and the strike remains razor-sharp. A trace of rub merges a few of the topmost hair strands. Struck from the scarcer of two die pairs, the coin shows the numerals in the date slightly closer together than seen on coins from the more-available die pair.
