Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1908-S $20 MS62 PCGS. San Francisco struck Liberty Head double eagles through 1907, and was the last mint in 1908 to receive dies for Saint-Gaudens coinage. All 1908-S twenties are of the With Motto type and were not delivered until August of that year. The considerable delay in production of the new issue occurred because of difficulties that branch mint encountered with the new segmented collar, which required more clearance to open than the San Francisco presses had. Double eagle production for the year amounted to only 22,000 coins with the S mintmark.
The 1908-S is an elusive issue in all Mint State grades. Most of the mintage was placed into temporary storage after coinage and later dispersed into commercial channels. Roger Burdette estimates that only about 1,500 coins survive, most of which are circulated or heavily abraded. This MS62 coin is about in the middle of the Mint State population. The strike is bold and the satiny luster is deep orange-gold. Scattered abrasions account for the grade.
