Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1916-S $20 MS66+ NGC. CAC. Thousands of Mint State 1916-S twenties have come to light in the past few decades. Consequently, this issue is available in all grades through MS65. However, Premium Gems are scarce and only a small handful -- two at NGC and three at PCGS -- are Plus-graded. The only finer coins are three MS67s at NGC, none of which have appeared at auction in nearly a decade. We have previously handled only on MS66+ coin, a PCGS piece in lot 7511 of our January 2011 FUN Signature sale that realized nearly $19,000. This piece, tied for the finest CAC-endorsed example of this date, displays eye-appealing sun-gold and lavender hues with sharp motifs. While many high-grade Saint-Gaudens double eagles show light contact marks along Liberty's figure, this piece is close to pristine. CAC: 27 in 66, 0 finer (11/17).
