Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1925-S $20 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Hesselgesser. Although the San Francisco Mint struck more than 3.7 million double eagles in 1925, few of those pieces were distributed to banks, and surviving examples are primarily those that contemporary collectors acquired at the time of issue. A large number of these coins were melted at the Mint during the following decade. One of the survivors is the present Select Mint State representative that features rich peripheral orange toning on its satiny and highly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces with minimal marks for the grade. PCGS has certified a mere 29 examples in finer grades (11/17).
