Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1926-D $20 MS62 PCGS. The 1926-D Saint-Gaudens double eagle, despite repatriations of some pieces, remains today a semikey issue in the series, particularly in higher Mint State grades. Much of the issue was apparently melted in the 1930s, save for the few pieces that had previously escaped the Mint or were exported. Out of a mintage of 481,000 coins, only about 600 pieces are believed to survive.
MS62 is about the average grade for Uncirculated survivors, with Gems and even near-Gems seldom seen. This representative exhibits lovely reddish-gold hues, interspersed with lilac, over satiny surfaces. The abrasions that account for the grade are mostly on the central devices. This is a prize that will fit in well with higher-grade coins in a quality double eagle collection.
