Territorial Gold
1852/1 $20 Humbert Twenty Dollar AU58 NGC. K-9, R.6. In late 1851, Moffat & Co., operating the U.S. Assay Office in San Francisco under contract, petitioned for permission to strike denominations below the current $50 octagonal ingots. Dies were prepared in anticipation of rapid approval, but authorization was not finalized until February 1852. The first $20 gold piece was only struck to the extent of 7,500 coins. That same month, Curtis, Perry, & Ward inherited the government Assay Office contract from John L. Moffat, and new dies were prepared for the small denominations, with a new reverse inscription that read: UNITED STATES ASSAY / OFFICE OF GOLD / SAN FRANCISCO / CALIFORNIA 1852.
This near-Mint Humbert twenty is bright yellow-gold and well-detailed with expected minor abrasions and slight high-point friction. The usual fine die cracks are seen around the border legends under a loupe. Listed on page 397 of the 2018 Guide Book.
