Territorial Gold
1853 $20 Assay Office Twenty Dollar, 900 Thous. -- Repaired -- NGC Details. Unc. K-18, R.2. An important twenty dollar issue from late in the production run of the San Francisco Assay Office, when it was operated by Curtis, Perry & Ward. The federal branch mint opened the following year, and Liberty Head double eagles replaced these temporary Assay Office pieces. The present coin is sharply struck and has bright yellow-gold color. The obverse fields are carefully brushed to remove contact marks, leaving behind a false luster that is not entirely unattractive to the naked eye. Listed on page 399 of the 2018 Guide Book.
