Territorial Gold
1860 $2 1/2 Clark, Gruber & Co. Quarter Eagle AU58 PCGS. K-1, R.4. The Clark brothers, grocers in Kansas, entered into a banking partnership with Emanuel Henry Gruber in March 1859 to capitalize on the economic boom that resulted from the Colorado Gold Rush of 1858. Within a few years, Clark, Gruber & Co. had established itself as not only the preeminent financial institution in Denver, but also a private coiner of excellent repute. The border elements of this bright yellow-gold quarter eagle are strongly detailed, while the centers are soft mostly due to strike but partly because of trivial blending. Listed on page 409 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 13 in 58, 29 finer (10/17).
