Buffalo Nickels
1937-D 5C Three-Legged, FS-901, MS62 NGC. A classic "demand rarity," so-named because there are simply more collectors wanting the Three-Legged variety than there are examples available, despite a relatively large surviving population. Hints of lilac appear over the primarily nickel-gray surfaces of this well-struck representative. The missing leg is truly gone, with just a ghost of the foot remaining beneath the legless haunch. Diagnostic die rust and other signs of die fatigue common to all genuine examples are present and confirm the authenticity of the variety.
Ex: Chicago Signature (Heritage, 8/2014), lot 3384.
