1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, 5 Vertical Lines, 10 Arrows, B-17, BB-101, R.5 -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. VF. Bowers Die State V. A rare variety, almost always well-circulated with an average grade at the lowest end of the VF level. This example is finely granular with some deep-gray toning on the obverse from environmental factors, but the coin is well-defined on most of the devices. Criss crossing adjustment marks exist on the reverse at the right shield/wing junction. Irregularity at the left obverse dentils is the result of die swell, diagnostic of the latest die stage. Relatively few examples are significantly finer than the present coin from perhaps 70 to 120 survivors of the die marriage.
