Early Dollars
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, B-11, BB-111, R.3, XF45 ANACS. Bowers Die State IV. The obverse die eventually failed in its sole use striking BB-111. The average grade for surviving examples is just VF25, placing XF and AU coins throughout the entire list of notable specimens. The die marriage is virtually unknown in full Mint State. This example displays light, dappled toning over silver surfaces in shades of gold, brown, and lavender. Die buckling and a bulge beneath the chin affects even early die stage coins. This middle state shows a strong die crack through three points of star 13 to the underside of Liberty's chin. Luster remains across the minimally abraded surfaces that are sharply struck except for the central curls and the eagle's head, neck, and breast. Housed in an early generation, small ANACS holder.
