1854-O $3 XF45 PCGS. Variety 2. Always in demand as the only New Orleans three dollar gold piece in the long-running series, the mintage of 24,000 pieces was accomplished by a single die pair. Variety 1 represents the scarce unlapped state of the dies, and Variety 2 shows a later, lapped die state. This Variety 2 example has weakness at STATES OF, the mintmark, and the ribbon/bow from die lapping. Traces of prooflikeness remains within the obverse legend and around the wreath. Numerous light abrasions pepper both sides of this Choice XF example, housed in a previous generation green label holder.
